A World Without Email

The book "A World Without Email" by Cal Newport explores the concept of working without email by looking at email origination and methods to move away from using this tool. The book overall provided a detailed overview of the rise of email and a plethora of techniques and tools to provide workflows that lessen the usage of email

Analysis

The writing style was written with an initial claim with the background of email followed by strategies and tools to move away from email. The chapters include detailed studies of experiments to reinforce Newport’s arguments and reinforce his viewpoint. The latter chapters talking about the methods were more verbose than necessary and could have been shortened. Nevertheless, Newport’s writing style overall was informative and data-driven.

Takeaways

I had two main takeaways: 1/ how to implement more tools for increasing attention capital and 2/ utilizing status meetings to increase productivity.

For how to implement more tools for increasing attention capital, Newport discusses using tools like Doodle for scheduling times for events and Kanban boards for managing different tasks with yourself and your teams. Both of these tools provide optimized workflows to minimize messaging to increase attention capital.

For utilizing status meetings to increase productivity, Newport talks about how developers meet in their scrum meetings to discuss what they did, what are they going to do, and what’s in their way during sprints. Even outside of the development domain, these continual check-ins provide a guiding tool for yourself to see what is next in your path rather than looking at the whole project.

Conclusion

In conclusion, "A World Without Email: Find Focus and Transform the Way You Work Forever" by Cal Newport offers valuable insights into the history of email and the hyperactive hive mind and how to rebuild workflows that apply attention capital theory.
