On Writing Well began as a reread to hone in on the fundamentals of writing. It did just that, but much, much more. Unlike other books, the chapters required you to sit with the text & digest it. Don’t get me wrong, some chapters were pretty straightforward. But Part III: Forms had a shift between commentary and quoted text, which invited pause. That is, if you welcomed it. Unfortunately, the hedonic treadmill of finishing up a book once a month sprinted me past. The dangling carrot of a checkmark item to finish by the end of the month had dissolved the beauty of writing into a chore. The occurrence happened once. Twice. Three times. And so on. At what point do you stop? When you choose to break the mold and let go of what no longer serves you. Replacing the deadline midway opened up space for the love of reading. Not for an accomplishment, but out of curiosity. Curiosity to amplify the best parts of you.
