With the blackout curtains hung and fresh produce filling the refrigerator, it was time to explore Seattle. Walking farther than usual, the rugged energy of Capitol Hill shifted into the sleek high-rises of South Lake Union. Reaching the waterfront, boats stretched as far as the eye could see. Amid them stood a street clock, glowing like an out-of-place beacon as if it slipped through the cracks of forgotten time. Its hands, poised at midnight, seemed eager to keep moving. Overhead, a plane traced its path into the distance. From the ground, no one knew its destination; only those on board, setting off toward a new field of possibility.
