Pushing Too Far One grab away from reaching the top, I reached with my right hand up to the final ledge. My hand failed to make contact, and I fell on my right ankle before hearing a pop sound. Hours later, I was in the emergency room getting an X-ray of my leg. No bone fractures (thank goodness), but there was soft tissue damage. Days later, a slew of thoughts filled my mind: “Would I be able to run the marathon? How can I do anything with this leg? I feel so trapped and constrained.” It was a sudden slap to the face of how this one accident changed the whole trajectory of the next few months. As the days went on, things calmed down. Going to physical therapy (PT) provided a way to move forward. Although it wasn’t running miles on end, progress was happening one step at a time.
